Is this likely to be the reason for the visual lag (and if I upgrade the card to something a bit newer, should that stop this from happening)? Or is it something else? I've got an NVIDIA GTX 760 with only 1 GB of dedicated VRAM. I've opened the task manager performance monitor on my second monitor while playing and there are no spikes - my Intel i7 CPU and 16 GB RAM are more than up to the task. If it's my hardware, I'm assuming it's the video card.

I'm wondering if there's something specific about my hardware causing the game to lag, or if it's the game itself and everyone experiences this.

If I mess up because I need more practice, that's cool, but if it's because the game is lagging, I feel crummy about it. But I've been noticing a lot of visual lag in the game, especially during faster sequences (in particular, Republic of Gamers tends to lag a lot at various points in the song) - and this really messes with my ability to complete those sequences accurately, which is frustrating.

I've had the game for a while and love it to bits.
